On the path to the smart factory

LESER's automation initiative pursues clear goals: to secure further growth and competitiveness while reducing the burden on the workforce. The vision is a forklift-free factory where one centralized logistics campus controls all material flows automatically. This will transform logistics from a supporting function into a key success factor for LESER's future growth.
To make this vision a reality, LESER focuses on three key logistics activities: transport, material handling, and storage. All current investments support this automation strategy. New production facilities, such as the hydrostatic pressure test bench, the Hessapp DVT200 with its own automation cell, and the expanded cast machining section, have all been equipped with logistics automation interfaces. Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) play a key role in this concept, handling transfers between machines and logistics stations.
The first AMR pilot at LESER, an AGILOX ONE called “Martin”, was commissioned at Hohenwestedt in August 2025. Martin keeps assembly stations supplied with parts, takes finished parts to the cleaning station, and efficiently travels long distances between the warehouse and the shipping department. The pilot phase in the existing environment provides valuable insights. Since space is limited, only a few selected storage positions and junctions have been set up to date. Yet the benefits are evident: supply processes are better organized, employees are gaining experience, and LESER is building know-how in logistics automation.

Major cornerstone

The next step is clear: construction of the new building will follow a “greenfield” approach with all transport jobs achievable by AMR. The AGILOX ONE will soon be able to automatically move parts containers between conveyor systems using an add-on module. What is more, the future AMR fleet is evolving; for instance, free-lift models will be able to pick up pallets from elevated levels.
The AMR is much more than a pilot project: it is an essential cornerstone in LESER’s automation strategy that symbolizes the way ahead to the forklift-free factory, where production and logistics form one integrated, smart system.
