The dual outlet pilot operated safety valve

The dual outlet pilot operated safety valve has two outlets that are opposite each other. In case of set pressure, the medium flows out evenly in exactly the opposite direction.

The advantage is that any reaction forces that occur almost cancel each other out. This means that the plant operator can save metal construction costs in the compressor station by installing a dual-outlet pilot operated safety valve. A typical application for this safety valve is natural gas pipeline compressor stations.

Advantages and areas of application

Advantages of the design

  • Reaction forces can be covered by using a fixture between both straight pipes.
  • The LESER design allows an installation as presented on the picture.

Field of application

  • This type of valve is frequently used for protection of compressor stations at pipelines for natural gas.
  • Further, the licensor Universan Oil Products (UOP) has it specified for certain processes inside refineries.
  • In UOP plants, lower pressures are often applied and the blow-out system is connected to a flare.

Reaction forces

  • For single outelt the API 520-2 gives a guideline how to determine reaction forces.
  • The reaction forces mainly depend on the massflow and therefore on the set pressure.
  • Two outlet will make the flow split half / half in opposite direction.
  • This will lead to lower and will balance reaction forces, which are related to the massflow.
